Read Up! Dogs at Bedtime

Have you got your library card ready?  Reserve these books now, and check them out!

Goodnight, Good Dog
Mary Lyn Ray & Rebecca Malone
This is a quiet book, quiet like the night.  Bedtime has come, but the dog isn't sleepy.  He's still thinking about his wonderful day in the sun with his family.  He's not ready for bed; he's ready for a new day to begin.  This seems like a very calming bedtime book, to help the people sharing it reflect upon their day, and think a bit about the next one.

Time for Bed, Fred
Yasmeen Ismail
While the dog in Goodnight, Good Dog quietly roams the house for a bit while his family sleeps, Fred is actively, disruptively, joyfully fighting against bedtime.  He's trying to squeeze in as much remaining action from the day as he can, before he is forced to go to bed.  It is probably those 26 pages of activity that finally tired him out!  I love the funny situations and the beautiful, action-loaded watercolor illustrations.

Have you read these books?  What do you think?  If you have any other favorite books to share, I'd love to hear about them!

Read Up! Charming Animal Edition

Have you got your library card ready?  Reserve these books now, and check them out!

Betty Goes Bananas
Steve Antony
Betty is a baby gorilla, and she loves bananas.  When she is unable to open one by herself, things get out of hand: she cries, sniffles, kicks & screams, until she finally calms down.  In fact, it seems as if Betty is always crying, sniffling, kicking & screaming. Toddlers & preschoolers with whom I've shared this amusing, colorful book always seem to think Betty is overreacting, and needs to calm down.

Froodle
Antoinette Portis
From the author of two of my favorite books (Not a Box & Not a Stick) comes this imaginative story of a little brown bird that would not say "peep."  "Froodle sproodle," "tiffle biffle," sure, but just no more "peep."  Such nonsense upsets the other birds--especially crow.  The children taking this story in, though, always find it hilarious.  Plenty of fun playing with sounds.

Big and Small
Elizabeth Bennett & Jane Chapman
Big is a bear and Small is a mouse, but that is neither here nor there.  Big is big, and Small is small.  Sometimes Small needs help.  But sometimes, Big needs help, too.  A sweet tale of friendship, empathy, and the power of all sizes.

Read Up! A book with no pictures, and a story with no words

I like these two as a set: one with no pictures, the other with no words!

The Book with No Pictures
B.J. Novak
At a family storytime, when I announced that the book had no pictures, kids whined.  Once I'd finished reading it, those same children begged for me to read it again.  And that is all I have to say about that.

The Boy & the Book (A Wordless Story)
David Michael Slater & Bob Kolar
A boy walks into the library unsupervised (his mother was there; she just wasn't supervising him), and he gets down to business, terrorizing the books.  This is a book to talk about together (since there are no words to read), perhaps gasping and shaking heads together, commiserating over the way these poor books get treated.

Read Up!

Two new books I think you may like--get out your library card & check them out!

Hiccupotamus
By Steve Smallman & Ada Grey
I started chanting & tapping to this book’s text nearly from the first line.  One by one, the jungle creatures gather to form a beautiful beat, with each animal making its own unique contribution.  The illustrations are colorful and simple, with beautiful textures, and before you've ventured very far into the book, you may already be feeling the urge to read it twice in a row!  Especially great for toddlers.

By Mouse and Frog
Deborah Freedman
Mouse wakes up early one day, eager to write a story.  When Mouse’s friend Frog shows up, though, Mouse’s plans go awry.  Having two authors really changes a story! The way these two create is in the style of Harold and the Purple Crayon, with the characters becoming immersed in a world of their own creation as they are creating it.  Somewhere in this busy little tale is a little lesson in cooperation, but never mind that!  Especially great for preschoolers & early elementary.

2014: A Look Back

I’m starting off 2015 with a look back at 2014:

Speaking Engagements:
It was a pleasure this year to speak at conferences of the Santa Clara County Reading Council & the American Library Association's Association of Library Service to Children.  At the Asilomar Reading Conference, I shared a few tips to help teachers refresh their reading presentation for their kids' benefit & their own sanity. At my ALSC Institute talk--held this year at Oakland's Children's Fairyland--I spoke with librarians about some ideas for incorporating the art & benefits of storytelling into their programming.  It was an honor to be included in both events!

I enjoyed being back in Pacific Grove for the 2014 Asilomar Reading Conference!

Festival Storytelling:
I love library Storytelling Festivals; they bring the art into peoples' communities, perhaps introducing them to storytelling for the very first time--and all for free!  This year, I shared tales at the Palo Alto Children's Library's Annual Storytelling Festival, and at the Sunnyvale Library's 25th Annual Storytelling Festival.

Sharing my stories & nonsense with everyone at the Sunnyvale Library

Library Storytelling:
I also visited the Sunnyvale Library and the Palo Alto Children's Library this year for individual storytelling appearances.  Other libraries I visited included the Campbell Library, the Los Osos Library, and the Menlo Park Library. In Menlo Park--one of my two home libraries--I hosted both weekly and monthly storytelling events at different times of the year.  It's wonderful to have ongoing programs like these, which have given me the opportunity to build on stories, and on audience knowledge, to really enrich the experience.

Storytelling in other public venues:
I got to bring my stories to some wonderful places this year! I made several visits to Children's Fairyland, a long-time storytelling home of mine, with regular weekend visits, as well as special-event storytelling for their Sleepover and Fairy Winterland events. I also returned to two of my favorite children's museums, the Hawaii Children's Discovery Center in Honolulu, and the Children's Discovery Museum in San Jose.
Aloha from the Hawaii Children's Discovery Center

On stage at Children's Fairyland

Schools, Summer Camps & More:
Preschools, Elementary Schools, Middle Schools, day camps, family campouts, book fairs, assemblies, a monthly "Storyteller-in-Residence" program...so many different opportunities!  This year, they brought me to cities including Alameda, Atherton, Foster City, Fremont, Moraga, Morgan Hill, Menlo Park, Novato, Palo Alto, Redwood City, San Mateo, San Ramon, Sunnyvale, and Walnut Creek.

Storytimes, programming & more at my library homes:
The Menlo Park Library and the Livermore Public Library have kept me busy this year with a multitude of duties. My regular storytimes have included Baby Storytime, Toddler Storytime, Preschool Storytime, School-age Storytime, Family Storytime, and Bilingual English/Spanish Storytime.  Hundreds of books shared!
Summer Reading Program planning once again allowed me to bring fun and valuable events to the libraries, and my new role in adult programming in Menlo Park has brought decades of my various experiences together, as I plan, promote, and host a regular series of events, including author appearances, informational presentations, cooking demonstration & instruction, poetry, and performance.  A big highlight of the year in Menlo Park was getting to host the Montclair Women's Big Band, an amazingly-talented group!  Over 300 people crowded the library to take in the after-hours holiday concert.
The programming job also lets me bring in a variety of professional storytellers for both adult & youth programs; this year, that group included Olga Loya, Eth-Noh-Tec, Ruth Halpern and Leona Hoegsberg.  I've already got more such events planned for 2015!

The Menlo Park Library.  I love being here.

So what’s ahead for 2015?
More storytimes!  More library programming!  More special library storytelling visits! More Children's Fairyland!  More festival storytelling!  More school Storyteller-in-Residence! Visit my Upcoming Events listing for dates of my upcoming storytelling visits in Campbell, Menlo Park, Oakland, Sunnyvale and beyond. What is beyond?  Stay with me and we will find out together! And if you know of a place you'd like to see me perform, please let the people in charge know about me!

Happy New Year!  Wishing you much health & happiness in 2015.
